FAQs about WattZero
Please read below to answer any and all questions that you may have about purchasing green energy plans in Texas through the WattZero marketplace. Please leave any additional questions that you may have at the bottom.
A. No, unlike some other marketplaces that are owned by energy providers, we are completely unbiased and are not affiliated with any energy provider. However, to provide you the cheapest rates we do work with all energy providers to get access to their offerings.
Q. How is this different from purchasing energy from other marketplaces and REP sites? Why should I pay when I can get an energy plan for free from other websites?
A. Most marketplaces make money through commissions on leads from energy providers. They are, therefore, incentivized to promote the energy plans that make the energy provider the most money and cost you the most. The commissions earned by these marketplaces are built into your monthly rate and end up costing you more than paying us when we save you money. WattZero does not make any money from the energy provider and only makes money when you save money.
Most sites show prices on the traditional values of 500, 1000, 2000 kWh. This does not make sense as a home’s usage varies through seasons. Your home may behave more like a 500 kWh home in winters and 2000 kWh home in summer.
WattZero reviews all your usage and all compatible clean energy plans and options and chooses the plan that fits your home.
A. Our fee is 10% of the savings that you get when you switch to a new plan with us with a minimum of $35. If we save you $1000 on a contract, then we charge you 10% of the $1000, which is $100. If we save you $200 on your contract, then 10% of $200 is $20. Since $20 is below our minimum of $35, we will charge you $35 in this case. Keep in mind this fee is tied to your estimated savings over the term of the contract.
A. Getting clean renewable energy does not have to be expensive.
We help homeowners find the cheapest clean energy plan from amongst the numerous energy plans available in Texas.
WattZero drills through all available energy plans to select the one that is not only the cheapest but also does not have any tripwires that would make your bill explode.
We manage your plan enrollment and provide you with an energy monitoring dashboard for you to understand your usage and identify waste and any vampire loads.
When your contract ends or when our algorithms show that it makes sense to switch to a different plan that can save you money, we sign you up with a new provider so that you avoid any price jump shock that happens when you are out of contract.
Q. What does the usage dashboard give me access to?
A. The dashboard provides you more detailed insights into your usage including a daily usage report, weekly energy usage heatmap, weekly comparison, impact of weather on your usage and insights about your ghost load. We are working with select partners to get you deals and these will soon be available in your dashboard. BTW, the Wattzero dashboard is free to use for life.
A. We have helped several customers who were locked into expensive contracts by connecting them with providers that reimburse early termination fees. When you sign up and share your bill, we will evaluate the remaining amount of your early termination fee that you need to pay to your current provider and compare it to the savings that are likely with switching. If based on this calculation we think that we can save you money, we will reach out to you and when confirmed make the switch.
A. No, even our engineering friends feel that it takes hours just to figure out a plan, and even then they still end up paying high monthly energy bills. WattZero has automated the whole process and we select the right plan tailored for your home. Some of the things that we go through when we choose a plan are: we rigorously go through the available options to make sure that there are no enticing terms that sound like that will save you money but will cost you more in the long run, that the company is providing you energy has good customer service, that the contract ends in a low electricity season so that even when we renew your energy bills stay low.
A. No, unlike some other service providers, we do not provide a monthly membership. We feel that there is no reason to charge a monthly fee when we will only be switching customers 2-3 times a year. We, therefore, tie our fee to savings and charge 10% of savings, instead of a monthly fee.
Q. If you do not provide a membership then how do you help with renewals?
A. We are looking for a long-term relationship with our customers. Even after you complete a transaction on our site, you continue to have access to your dashboard and while we do not charge you a monthly “membership fee” we do monitor your account for unusual bill activity and charges. When our algorithms alert us that you can save money by switching (keeping in mind the early termination fee), we will send you a notification and make the switch.
Q. What happens to my current plan when I enroll with Wattzero?
A. When we switch you over to a new provider, we also take care of your contract with your old provider. The old provider will send you a final bill that you are responsible for.
Q. How does the service of some of these smaller retail energy providers compare with large providers such as Reliant? Will my power be consistent, or will I lose power?
A. The maintenance of your grid infrastructure such as transformers and poles is the responsibility of your transmission and distribution service provider (TDSP). For a geographical region, you have only one TDSP, no matter who the retail energy provider. Therefore, your home power will have the same consistency, no matter the energy provider. Also note that in Texas, the TDSP fee is included in the energy bill that you receive from your energy provider.
Q. How do you keep all my personal information safe?
A. We take your data security very seriously. It is critical to us that your data remains safe, we use industry-leading encryption and are constantly working towards neutralizing any threats that might put it at risk. We have created PCI-compliant procedures that remove the risk of your information theft.
Q. How do your plans compare to free weekend and free night plans?
A. There is no free lunch. Our review of numerous free weekend/night offers showed that they are just gimmicky plans that significantly increase consumer costs. While free sounds enticing, these plans charge you almost double for the period of the week when they do charge you for money. They end up being very expensive and we do not consider them in our set of plans.
